Cultural of Bali
Bali is one of Indonesia’s most popular destinations. It boasts of rich culture that is heavily influenced by India and Hinduism. In fact, Bali is home to most of the country’s Hindu population. For the best experience on your holiday, we’d recommend that you acquaint and immerse yourself in the vibrant local Balinese culture. When it’s time to depart, you’ll be able to leave with more than just great pictures, but a lifetime of memories from this beautiful island. Here’s everything you need to know about the culture of Bali.
Art and Craft of Bali
Art & Crafts is a result of human work which can be tangible or intangible. Indonesia Arts & Crafts reflect to the regional histories, relegions and influences of the archipelago’s mind-boggling array of ethnic groups. Indonesia Arts can be classified in to the three main streams within Indonesia.
The first, is that of the outer Indonesia, the islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Irian Jaya and Maluku, which have strong animist traditions. Carvings, weaving, pottery etc, have developed from a tribal art in which art objects are part of worship.
The second streamis that inner Indonesia, the islands of Java and Bali that have come under the greatest influence from Hindu-Budha tradition. The Technique and styles that built Borobudur and the Indian Epics such as The Mahabarata, that form the basis for wayang theatre are still a major influence in arts.
The third influences is that of Islam, which not so much introduced its own art & crafts traditions, but modified existing traditions.
Balinese Cuisine
Being Indonesian with influences of Chinese and Indian cuisines, the food in Bali has a unique identity, As with much of Southeast Asia, rice is a staple here. With Bali’s sophisticated irrigation systems, this is quite understandable. This is accompanied by vegetables, meat and seafood. Although chicken, pork, seafood and mutton are consumed in Bali, beef is rarely or never consumed as per Hindu beliefs. The dishes are cooked in rich spices such as ginger, lime, nutmeg, clove, coriander, and shallots.
Some of the most common dishes in Bali are: babi guling (roast pig), nasi campur (mixed rice), lawar (meat, vegetables and rice), sambal (hot sauce made with chili, shrimp paste, finger, and vinegar) with rice, rawon babi (pork stew), bebek betutu (crispy duck) and sayur urub (mixed salad). For drinks, Bali is known for cincau (black jelly and ice), kelapa muda (coconut water), sari temulawak (ginger soda) and kopi bali (coffee).. In terms of alcohol drinks, you can find tuk (palm toddy), brem (red rice wine), arak (white rice wine)
Bali Language
Balinese language and Indonesian are the most widely spoken languages in Bali, and the vast majority of Balinese people are bilingual or trilingual. The most common spoken language around the tourist areas is Indonesian, as many people in the tourist sector are not solely Balinese, but migrants from Java, Lombok, Sumatra, and other parts of Indonesia. There are several indigenous Balinese languages, but most Balinese can also use the most widely spoken option: modern common Balinese.
